Tidy Desk, Tidy Mind This doesnââ¬â¢t work for everyone (some people thrive on chaos), but generally youââ¬â¢ll find yourself more productive if your study environment is tidy and organized. This is partly because keeping your workspace tidy makes it easier to find books, notes or anything else you need when you need it. Background Music Many people find a bit of background music good for concentration. Instrumental music is the best option here, as songs with lyrics can become distracting. Note, however, that wearing headphones while revising has been found to make it harder to recall what youââ¬â¢ve read. So although you might think that wearing headphones is a good way to block out noise when studying at a coffee shop, it might also interfere with your learning! It definitely helps if you open your eyes, too. 5. Comfort is Key! Temperature, lighting and comfort all make a big difference if youââ¬â¢re settling in for a prolonged study session. Make sure your environment is cool, well-lit and comfortable enough that you wonââ¬â¢t become restless after a few minutes working. Taking regular breaks is also helpful. You can also be too comfortable, though, so studying in bed is probably not a great idea. 6. Be Preparedâ⬠¦ Ultimately, the most important thing when creating a study environment is to be prepared! I agree with the author as he says that the addiction disrupts the functioning of social life in many areas but he did not mentioned about the new technologies and services like social networking addictio n and text messaging services. As the author said the addiction to internet may not always damages their social relations. I shall show that the addictions to internet may improve the social functionality of the people. In Douglas A. Gentiles article he explained the term addiction as to do something which will spoil their regular life functionalities. They will spoil more than one or two functionalities of their normal life such as their social functionality and work operations, school operations and even family relations just because of their addiction. By considering the above functionality disorders Gentile said that 8.5% of young games are addicted in America. (Gentile 2009).[1] As of now there are no accepted risk factors or symptoms in order to identify the addiction Gentile suggested some factors as a basic guide to find the addiction of video games. These are the symptoms suggested by Gentile to be used as a guide to identify the addiction in case of children. And when it comes to the adults he suggested the risk factors as follows. And Gentile also suggested some physical symptoms which may indicate to addiction. Those symptoms are disturbances in sleep, back ache and neck aches, headaches and neglecting personal hygiene because of not eating regularly.[1] In his article Gentile said that for the person who is addicted to computers and video games, a fantasy life in on-line or in the video games replaces his original real world. It means the person who plays the games knows that he should finish his home work, but he cannot stop the desire to play for some more time. And the Gentile said that it is not only in the case of games. The person may have addiction of computers or internet to stay away from rest of their social life.[2] The author has given some reasons on why people get addicted to the internet, computers and games. He said three basic requirements that direct to human motivation. These requirements are the requirement of autonomy (that is the human want to believe that he is in charge about the thing he is doing), the requirement of relatedness (it means that human wants to feel joined with other persons), and the requirement of competence (that is human want to believe that he is better at things). These are the three basic requirements of self-determination theory. The video games and internet are superb to satisfy these three requirements and because of this reason they are highly motivating things and leads people to get addicted to them. Gentile gave some suggestions in his article about how to get out of these disorders. He suggested taking the person who is spending lot of time on games and internet to the counsellor who treats the people having impulse-control disorders. And by following the physical symptoms suggested by gentile as indications we can definitely know whether we are addicted to any of those computers, video games, and internet or not. And i support the questions covered in the scale taken by gentle in order to find out the addiction level of a person. By asking those questions themselves the people can find out their addiction level and can take some cautions to get out of the addiction. And he gave some best reasons for getting addicted to these technology things. And the addiction to the internet and video games may not always a big problem as those addictions may get out of the people as time passes. The United States Constitution is a document considered almost sacred by many Who live in this country.à Liberty and freedom are often considered our greatest resources (Burns, Peltason & Cronin p10).à However, while the idea of ââ¬Å"liberty and justice for allâ⬠stands optimistically in its citizenââ¬â¢s minds, the reality is much more complicated.à Questions arise such as; does freedom of speech include yelling fire in a crowded theater?à When one personââ¬â¢s rights infringe upon another, whose liberties take precedence?à In some cases, the question has even arisen, does ââ¬Å"all men are created equalâ⬠really apply to all men?à What about women? In creating the United States, a fine balance has been created between the majority and the minority.à Obviously, for a functioning democracy to work, the majority vote would rule.à As Abraham Lincoln said ââ¬Å"Unanimity is impossible; the rule of a minority, as a permanent arrangement, is wholly inadmissible (Rejai p70).â⬠à However, he also commented that the majority must be constrained ââ¬Å"With deliberate changes of popular opinion and sentiments (Rejai p70)â⬠in order to remain a free people. Still it was important to the founders of the United States for the importance of the individual to be retained.à The Bill of Rights, especially the first amendment, was written to remove governmentââ¬â¢s ability to limit those rights (Burns, Peltason & Cronin p11).à The authors understood that freedom of speech, the press and religion were major rights and needed extra protection from repression. Over time the government was also used to prevent individuals from impeding on the rights of other persons.à For instance, Amendment 26 in the Bill of Rights states ââ¬Å"The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States of by any other State on account of age.â⬠à Upon reaching adulthood, it was determined that everyone should have their equal vote (Burns, Peltason & Cronin p 14) and no one should be able to deny an individual that right. Minority rights continue to be an issue, however, despite the passing of several amendments to protect such rights.à In some cases, this is done because it has been determined that the protection of society is more important than the rights of the individual.à The fourteenth amendment, for instance, states ââ¬Å"No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States.â⬠à However, in many cases, laws are passed that interfere with the right of sexual predators by forcing them to declare themselves to law enforcement and/or their neighbors. In other cases, despite the goal of ââ¬Å"liberty and justice for allâ⬠minorities continue to be discriminated against for religious or political reasons, or simply because they are minorities.à Homosexuals, for instance, continue to be denied the right to marry in the majority of states (Nava & Dawidoff pxii).à In this case, the vote of the majority continues to outweigh the minority despite the loss of civil liberties and despite that fact that this has no direct effect on the majority. On the other hand, in certain cases when the rights of the minority and the majority clash, the minority-member is given precedence, due to past injustices done to the minority as a whole.à This is the case in affirmative action, where minorities are given preference over the majority due to their past lack of status.à The practice seeks to make up for previous lack of economic and educational opportunities, often at the expense of those classes who have had them. The balance between the society and the individual, majorities and minorities is a difficult one.à In forming the Constitution, attempts were made to appease all sides and amendments were made as societyââ¬â¢s ideas of what were important changed.à This pendulum continues to be in constant flux, with the majority or minorities occasionally taking precedence over the other as elected officials see a need.à It remains a vital process however, since the entire foundation of the United States is dependant on this equilibrium.
