Non-Indigenous People of The Urban

Question: 1.The Health Promotion Poster ? Answer : Introducation: As depicted in the banner in the figure 1, the focused on crowds are the non-indigenous individuals of Australia. All the more absolutely, the best possible objective crowd for the banner is the non-indigenous individuals of the urban spots of Australia. The central issue that has been attracted the banner is the issue of bigotry on the indigenous individuals of Australia, even in the urban spot where because of the act of prejudice on the indigenous individuals of Australia by the non-indigenous individuals of Australia is expanding the degree of mental despondency and nervousness among the indigenous individuals. The banner is principally demonstrative of the way that racial separation in a general public just winds up in exacting mental damage upon the human people who turns into the survivor of such acts. Occasion it has been seen from a few confirmations that as a result of the explanation of racial separation and menace, individuals frequently takes their lives by ending it all , which is considered as the extraordinary type of discouragement and nervousness (Ben et al., 2014). In the specific circumstance, it is huge to make reference to that the underlying result of prejudice upon humankind is trouble, an utilization of which causes outrageous gloom, uneasiness and disappointment. With regards to the banner, it is noteworthy to make reference to that the depicted perspective is demonstrative of the racial segregation, which is visit on the indigenous individuals of Australia. It is clear from a few examines that by and by, close about portion of the Australian urban residents are bigot towards the native or indigenous individuals. In urban spots, indigenous or native individuals experience racial reactions and jokes in social premises like work place. Through a few explores, it has been distinguished that prejudice comes through verbal and non-verbal domineering jerks, which leaves them offended and disappointed (Ben et al., 2014). It is a high time that the non-indigenous individuals will comprehend their imperfections and maintain good manners, so further no indigenous individual would need to take the choice of killing him/her self. It is to ponder here that likely the thought of racially separating indigenous individuals of Australian even in the urban spots has occurred from when the in 1788 the indigenous individuals of Australian have been arranged from their country by Britain. It is amazing to mean that racial victimization the indigenous individuals by the non-indigenous individuals in the urban spots of Australia is viewed as a typical conduct. Moreover, by the battle of beyondblue, it has been recognized that one in each urban Australian individual has conceded that they might want to separate more often than not when they would locate an indigenous person. Most essentially, it is required to make reference to here that for an exceptionally prolonged stretch of time, prejudice against the indigenous individuals is viewed as a programmed reaction as per the non-indigenous individuals of Australia (Freeman et al., 2014). It is disastrous too that the probability and measures to mediate or to decrease prejudice against the indigenous individuals are restricted. The announcement is valid according to the proof that the measurement is demonstrative of the way that up to this point over 97% of the indigenous individuals both from urban and provincial spots of Australia (Herring et al., 2013). Then again, as per 87% of the Australian individuals have concurred with the way that bigotry just as racial partialities are as yet developing the under gut of Australia. As far as outcome, it has been discovered that over 65% of the native individuals of Australian experience the ill effects of despondency and uneasiness in view of confronting racial bias in working environment and in commercial centers (Hollinsworth, 2016). It has been distinguished that more often than not the youthful to moderately aged age are focused for the bigot menace. The substance of the banner would fill in as a message for the non-indi genous individuals who regularly practice racial segregation with the native individuals of Australia. The banner would show them reality that indigenous or native individuals of the nation have total rights to carry on with an actual existence where they can get to all the administration and respect, which the non-indigenous individuals appreciate. Most essentially, it very well may be said that the banner would especially focus on the non-indigenous individuals of Queensland where the pace of racial oppression the native individuals. In this regard, it is basic to state that the neighborhood network of Queensland believe that native individuals are given with additional advantages by the administration (Ruhanen Whitford, 2016). The greater part of the non-indigenous individuals accept that indigenous or native individuals are lethargic and they are getting a charge out of uncalled for points of interest by the Australian government. The outcome is more awful as it has been recognized that the pace of self destruction because of extraordinary gloom and hypertension and in a large portion of the cases it has been discovered that the explanation has been prejudice in social places alongside the issue of low pay and absence of social access. In this way, the banner will function as a mindfulness message for the non-indigenous indi viduals of the Queensland explicitly and different spots of Australia. Do I Want to Keep This

Do I Want to Keep This Even as a decade-long minimalist, I still need to cull my excess from time to time. Ive been going through my clothes this week, even those that fit into the 90/90 Rule, and Ive been asking myself, Do I want to keep this? I hold an item in my hand. Do I really want to keep this? If the answer is Hell yeah!, then I place it back in my closet. But if the answer is Im not sure, then I must wear the item within the next seven days. If its not one of my favorite pieces of clothes after wearing it once, then I donate it. The jackets, shirts, and pants I once enjoyed may not add value to my life anymore, but maybe they can be someone elses favorites now. Subscribe to The Minimalists via email.

The Bigger Questions

Ah, yes. We are all quite familiar with this time of year. Some call it â€Å"Dog Days.† Some call it â€Å"Last Glimpse of Freedom.† Anyway, others just call it August. But even those who don’t know the feeling sense that†¦ aura of anxiety emanating from reluctant adolescents gearing up for the new school year. And the expression of dread is no more apparent than on the faces of senior class members. True, there are some of us who are ecstatic about spending time with friends, a more manageable class schedule, and of course, senior privileges (including Being At the Top of the Food Chain), but while senior year should be ubiquitously awesome, one cannot ignore the elephant in the room. Seniors are warriors, and summer through fall we’re collecting ammunition, drawing battle plans for the onslaught that is applying to college. Well, that might not be the case for everyone, but one thing is certain: it’s a rather stressful period of time, especi ally if you’re applying to some higher profile, more competitive schools. I had always imagined I’d go to a big name school. Why? Because it had a big name. Anything less than Harvard would be a disappointment to my family and bring dishonor to my name. At least, that was what was stuck in my mind. This summer I toured the University with my step-godsister (yes, I understand that’s convoluted). She had graduated from one such high profile college, and was doing some research with classmates at Tufts Medical School. Kindly, she had taken some time off to help me get my head around the whole college thing. The tour was disappointing (we inexplicably had no access to the dining hall, library, or any of the dorms) and I wasn’t a big fan of Cambridge. But I pushed aside these conflicting feelings in favor of repeating the speculative jibber-jabber about the prestigious institution that had been thrown at me by friends, family members, and college authorities. In fact, I knew less about Harvard after the tour than I did before it. I told Anne (godsister) about my, what I thought to be, disturbing feelings. Little did I know that uncertainty is not fatal. She â€Å"knew a guy,† she told me, which under any other circumstances should be the end of a conversation, but I was desperate for any information that could help me discern Harvard from Brown from U Penn from Princeton etc (other than location, of course). That was the day I met Matt. Or was his name Dan? Anyway, while his name is forgettable the knowledge he imparted was not. His first point was that all â€Å"Ivies† are the same; so don’t spend a lot of time trying to discern Harvard from Brown from U Penn from Princeton etc. Secondly, there exists a class of people who have the uncanny ability to appear intelligent â€Å"on paper† (i.e. on the application) but are unable to have any sort of intellectual conversation with another person, so I should keep in mind what kind of student body I want to be a part of. Lastly, get ready for a socioeconomic shock. Not that his experience at Harvard had marked an introduction to poverty, no; he himself had been homeless at one point. The shock he had encountered was in response to unimaginable wealth (I recall mention of a classmate receiving the Magna Carta for her birthday). Now, whether he was just trying to mess with me or not ultimately didn’t matter. Anne had already told me that adjusting to life after college had been difficult for her because Spring Break plans suddenly didn’t involve yachts or the south of France. And she wasn’t being snobbish. In fact, she was laughing at herself, trying to point out how ridiculous it was that experiences that are once in a lifetime for many people, had become almost quotidian for her. â€Å"Basically,† she told me, â€Å"watch out for becoming jaded.† Matt (or Dan) was also trying to prove a point. The three bits of information he gave me were not supposed to be inherently frightening; they were supposed to be enlightening. Matt or Dan or whatever his name was (David?) was trying to force me to ask a question I had, ignorantly enough, failed to ask myself: is Harvard right for me? Long story short, the answer was no. Surprisingly enough, that was fine by me (and my family). Apparently I had skipped the chapter in virtually every college admissions book that says, â€Å"Choosing the right college first requires a bit of introspection,† or something to that effect, and it led only to pain and suffering. So seniors, amid all the frantic acrobatics that are involved in the college admissions process, be at peace with the fact that if you’re not right for X University, X University is not right for you. There’s a world beyond SAT tutors, college counselors, and admissions personnel; keep in mind what’s best for you personally, and ask yourself another essential qu estion one of these final summer days: What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

The Atlantic Slave Trade Does Still Impact Racism Today

The Atlantic slave trade does still impact racism today in the US. The struggles over slavery gave a civil war, segregation, Jim Crow laws, and finally a civil rights movement to help us move forward and progress. Many scholars argue that slavery created racism, in the artificial categories of black and white. Racism was created, at least in large part, to justify slavery. To dumb it down for people who really don t understand is racism is basically racial prejudice or discrimination. Some may strongly believe that the Atlantic slave trade impacted racism today negatively. With police brutality on blacks, the negative implicit of blacks on others, and stereotypical remarks made by people these are few of the reasons why racism is still a†¦show more content†¦According to worldometers.info, there are 7.5 billion people in the world. 8.8 millions of those people are African American. That means about 2,933,000 African Americans will be shot dead throughout the years. That is taking out a great chunk of the population. This is not an ideal past, present, and or future for the idea of utilitarianism. Another contention is that the last year police officers were killed at an alarming rate was in 1930.. Yet, if people were to do more research on the death rate comparison over the years some would complain how since the 1900s probably the death rates for blacks keep rising and have never dropped. No one is saying that those cops who died don’t matter; just compared to others it seems miniscule. Many people take every person s death as a serious matter because â€Å"they† know if it was reverse roles many would feel just as worse maybe. It really doesn’t add up because every year it s becoming all the minorities now just being targeted by these police who have been corrupted by the ideology of figures in power to people in general or idols. Personal Leadership Style. Every Organization Has A...

Personal Leadership Style Every organization has a management team, with the success the organization in the hands of these leaders and managers. How the organization is run is generally determined by the executive leaders and filtered down through a series of positions on an organizational chart. In hospital healthcare, at the end of the chart is the care provided by the nursing staff. Leadership styles are varied and there is no correct theory, however every leader must recognize which theory they practice and be aware of any pitfalls or downside to the chosen theory. I have always believed my leadership style to be democratic and recently confirmed this with the use of Clarks (2004) Leadership Style Survey. The purpose of this paper is†¦show more content†¦This is a process could be improved upon as the staff and the leader become more accustomed to working in a partnership as opposed to a dictatorship. The role of the nurse leader is only one part of a nursing organization, with management also lending a large share of the decision-making process and planning. At times the role of the leader and manager may appear to blur, however one can define the manager as the person who organizes, plans and directs others. This management role will seek to accomplish organizational goals by means of the available resources (Huber, 2014). I tend to need information before I react in a situation and as such, I ponder most decisions after thorough investigation. I need to know what is needed to happen in order to decide how to plan and organize a response. There are many management theory models, but for this writing, I have chosen to discuss Contingency Theory Management (CTM) which is in line with my style of managing. CTM is, in actuality, a leadership theory which has a role in management also. Using CTM, one would look at the current circumstances and any requirements before making decisions (Huber, 2014). CTM is confronted with ever changing needs and therefore, the type of management theory used may too change along with the needs. The manager who uses CTM will have the option of integrating other management theories as needed. Video Games do Not Cause Violent Behaviour in Children or Adolescents From the beginnings of the industry, violence in video games has been an issue of discussion. From the pixilated weaponry in Space Invaders to the myriad of weapons in Unreal Tournament 2003, games have evolved over the years. Newer games are more real. Their environments are more immersive. Small details such as rain drops or a falling corpse are now realistically detailed in the games we play. Adam Smith’s American Dream free essay sample

The Whybrow’s article â€Å"Adam Smith’s American Dream: of Desire and Debt† provides a critical review of the American Dream applied to a contemporary society. The style of writing is narrative, though is strongly supported by evidence. The author provides relevant examples, suggestions and considerations concerning to topic discussed. The article may be conditionally divided into introductory paragraphs providing the general information about contemporary American society and its problems; main body pointing out the core issues regarding Adam Smiths dream meaning that people are subjected to make debts; conclusion providing summing up of the material and author’s personal suggestions. The article is useful for students as well as scientists and teacher as it provides thorough detailed examination of the case with proper conclusions and suggestions. (Whybrow 2006) In introduction the author claims that some Americans still believe that nobody is able to become wealthy in the country, though there were many fable stories about lucky individuals who due to their hard-working, right running and desired has made their dream come true. We will write a custom essay sample on Adam Smith’s American Dream or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page (Whybrow 2006) Whybrow says that such stories reflect striving of many Americans to better living. However, many of the dreams are tarnished. The author defines the main problem of the modern business considering that businesses are too fickle, frantic and they are only profit-driven. According to the author to be successful means to be like multitask dynamo. It is summarized that American fast lifestyle is a real source of anxiety, depressions and frustrations as it is difficult for average people to survive. The author characterizes American life to be full of discomfort and discontent due to technology development. For majority of Americans the life nowadays is less satisfactory. According to numerous surveys conducted it is indicated that despite serious economic and political achievement of the country, people   work longer having thus less time for their families. The author concentrates also on American achievements, stating that America is the richest country in the whole world, though the Americans appetites for materials things are expanding. For example, contemporary houses of rich people seem to be cathedrals and palaces, whereas there are people who can’t afford any housing because of lack of money. The author underlines the serious social inequality considering it to be a real gap among society layers. (Whybrow 2006) Whybrow asserts that American nations are in the â€Å"orgy of debt†. The family savings fell to zero meaning that more people remain unemployed. The article provides relevant questions to find out what goes wrong and how the situation can be either changed or improved. It is evident that market society requires money which requires work. Whybrow cites economists who argue that when a person borrows money to make a purchase, it is a rational act. Nevertheless, the author doesn’t share such viewpoint. It is suggested that American society lead industrialized country to a personal debt. It means that American consumers are only victims of corporate exploitation. (Whybrow 2006) Nevertheless, the author finds both explanations mentioned above incomplete. He asserts that by loaning money people become enslaved to the workplace. They are imprisoned by their dreams, because desire drives debt. The situation may be changed if people realize that it is desire, not need, drives them to make debt in order to remain the desired material things. Desire, according to the author, is a serious problem of the modern society. People need to control their human instincts and to learn more neurobiology and history to have clear understanding what is going o with them. Adams Smith was a famous professor of moral psychology who set out simple principles designed â€Å"the free the self-interest of the average working man†. (Whybrow 2006) Smith’s writings were likely to be the guidelines of bedrock of the American economic success. Smith provided information how to survive in capitalist country and to remain humane. The author suggests that smith’s writings are important for understanding the growing discomfort being experienced by American society. It is admitted that Smith’s theory is based mostly on biology of human behavior. Actually Adam smith was the first to rationalize the human instincts and desires within the economic framework. Whybrow cites Smith arguing that contemporary society is driven by self-love and self-interest to achieve the desired outcomes. Most humans are hard-working and ingenious willing to achieve great social benefits. Smith asserts that it is the instinct of self-preservation. The essential complement is the instinctual curiosity meaning the desire to explore new places. Success of market society depends on individuals’ democracies and liberties as well as the freedom of expression. Adams summarized the keys to social improvements suggesting they were curiosity, self-interest, self-preservation, material gains and expressed ambitions. (Whybrow 2006) Whybrow emphases that Smith’s ideas were integral to the vision of the Founding Fathers. Therefore Smith’s ideas found practical application in American nation. It is concluded that American dream nowadays is significantly magnified by globalization processes, technology developments, though social good is paid less attention. The author provides a conclusion the key to success in contemporary America is accumulation of material wealth. It means that American society has built aggressive capitalist system and thus the society has been dramatically changed. (Whybrow 2006) References Whybrow, Peter. (2006). Steinbeck Essays (881 words) - Dust Bowl, U.S. Route 66,

Steinbeck "I never wrote two books alike", once said John Steinbeck (Shaw, 10). That may be true, but I think that he wrote many of his novels and short stories based on many of the same views. He often focused on social problems, like the "haves" verses the "have nots", and made the reader want to encourage the underdog. Steinbeck's back ground and concern for the common man made him one of the best writers for human rights. John Steinbeck was born in Salians, California and spent most of his life there or around Salians, because of that he often modeled his stories and the characters around the land he loved and the experiences he encountered. He lived in Salians until 1919, when he left for Stanford University, he only enrolled in the courses that pleased him - literature, creative writing and majoring in Marine Biology. He left in 1925, without a degree. Even though he didn't graduate his books showed the results of his five years spent there. His books display a considerable reading of the Greek and Roman historians, and the medieval and Renaissance fabalists and the biological sciences (Shaw 11). He then moved to New York and tried his hand as a construction worker and as a reporter for the American. (Covici , xxxv). Steinbeck then moved back to California and lived with his wife at Pacific Grove. In 1934, he wrote for the San Franciso News, he was assigned to write several articles about the 3,000 migrants flooded in at Kings County. The plight of the migrant workers motivated him to help and document their struggle. The money he earned from the newspaper allowed him to travel to their home and see why their reason for leaving and traveled to California with them, sharing in with their hardships (Steinbeck, 127). Because John Steinbeck was able to travel with the Okies, he was able to accurately portray them and their struggles. Each book that he wrote had settings in the places where he has either lived or wanted to live. He presented the land as it was. The characters in his stories experienced floods, drought, and other natural disasters, while in the Salians Valley (Shaw, 5). What Steinbeck wrote was very factual and in depth. He exhibited his awareness of man and his surroundings, in his early books, before people ate, a pig had to be slaughtered, and often that and before they ate, it had to be cooked. Also when a car broke down, the characters had to find parts, and fixed it themselves (Shaw, 13). Many people consider that John Steinbeck novels are records of social history. His books are the history of plain people and society as a whole, many of his books focused on the Great Depression, Social Prejudice, religion, and the automobile (Rundell, 4). He may be considered as a Sentimentalist, because of his concerns for the common man, human values, for warmth and love and understanding. The social relevance of his writings reveals him as a reformer (Covici, xxii). In his novel The Pastures of Heaven, Steinbeck brings up the issues of Japanese Americans fitting into social groups, and in East of Eden, he examines the problems of intelligent and educated Chinese-Americans in the California setting. John Steinbeck only once seriously considers the problems of Negroes in Society. Crooks, the stable boy in Of Mice and Men, was an outcast and never destine to fit into the generally white society of ranching. Not only did Steinbeck recognize the -problems of minorities and racial prejudice, he also mentioned class prejudice. The difference between the "haves" verses the ?have nots" was brought up in the novel, The Grapes of Wrath, usually the people who had any financial stability hated the Okies, who had none. Owners hated the Okies because they were soft and the Okies were strong, also the store keepers hated them because the Okies had no money to spend in their stores (Bowden, 12). The Grapes of Wrath presents these issues in the form of an epic and sums up the despair of the early 1930's. The Joads experience: love, brotherhood, integrity, class fear, power, violence, and suspension, the same as every other migrant. Their conflict was a national epic, instead of a personal one. The parable of the tortoise crossing the road represents the people of the 1930's, he is beaten by the sun, knocked around, and struggles, but probably reaches his destination. In his other stories, he also uses characters and symbols to represent the migrants of the

Pros and Cons of Using a Pro and Cons Essay Topic

Pros and Cons of Using a Pro and Cons Essay TopicOne of the big advantages of having a topic for your Pro and Con's essay is that you have the power to take control of the pacing and style of the paper. You also have the opportunity to bring in elements of the dissertation essay to the Pro and Con's essay. Keep in mind that although this is very powerful, there are some pros and cons to using this style of essay.First of all, while you will find a few people who really like the idea of incorporating the dissertation style of essay into their Pro and Con's essay, there are also some people who are leery of it because they fear that the dissertation style is too academic for a high school level composition. The reason for this concern is that the subject of a Pro and Con's essay is not usually a topic that has direct bearing on the curriculum and that does not lend itself to the academic atmosphere of high school. In addition, the dissertation style of essay would not really fit well w ith a focus on sports or music. On the other hand, there are also some pros to using a Pro and Con's essay. One of the major pro's is that you will be able to make use of more advanced techniques and tools in the essay. As we mentioned above, you can use the dissertation style of essay to bring in more sophisticated language and additional academic concepts to the subject matter of the essay. This will make it a bit more sophisticated, as opposed to writing a high school paper. On the other hand, there are also some cons to using a Pro and Con's essay. Although the subject of the paper is not typically a topic that is directly related to the curriculum, the format of the paper does limit you somewhat. The truth is that there are some aspects of the dissertation style of essay that require a level of attention that you simply cannot give in a Pro and Con's essay. This would be true for both content and style. For instance, while you may be able to include details and arguments about var ious aspects of the subject, you may be unable to draw on research technique. There is no way to use a dissertation style of essay to do research and analyze concepts that has been described in any depth in a Pro and Con's essay. You would just be discussing the general features of the subject matter and making generalizations. At the same time, you cannot use the dissertation style of essay to do an in-depth analysis of the things that you will be discussing in the rest of the paper. As a result, there are some pros and cons that go hand in hand with using the Pro and Con's essay. As a result, if you use the dissertation style of essay, you can make use of more advanced tools and techniques in the essay. However, you can also lose some of the depth that you gain by using the style of the essay. If you are writing a Pro and Con's essay and cannot do any kind of research, you may need to make more choices in the features of the essay to make it more interesting. While it may not be mu ch different from a high school paper, it can still be tricky.Keep in mind that while there are both pros and cons to using the dissertation style of essay, this form of paper does have a strong sense of style. You can still be creative in the way that you use this style, but you cannot really take the academic feel out of the document. On the other hand, you can easily use the style of essay to integrate concepts and arguments that have been described in detail in the body of the essay, which makes the essay more exciting.

6 Ways to Create a Productive Study Environment

6 Ways to Create a Productive Study Environment 6 Ways to Create a Productive Study Environment Whether you’re studying for a test or writing an assignment, working effectively depends heavily on your surroundings. As such, it’s critical that you have a good study environment. Luckily, we have six top tips for what makes the perfect place to study. All you need to do is keep the following considerations in mind†¦ 1. Location, Location, Location! Where you go to work makes a big difference to your productivity. If you’re studying at home, the key will be finding somewhere away from distractions and disturbances. If you don’t want to study at home, however, or if your party-hard housemates make working from home a little challenging, you have plenty of alternative options, including libraries and coffee shops. 2. Tidy Desk, Tidy Mind This doesn’t work for everyone (some people thrive on chaos), but generally you’ll find yourself more productive if your study environment is tidy and organized. This is partly because keeping your workspace tidy makes it easier to find books, notes or anything else you need when you need it. But it’s also because not being surrounded by piles of clutter and discarded coffee cups can make it easier to focus on the task at hand! Theres probably a desk under there somewhere. [Image: Ali West/flickr] 3. Eliminate Distractions You’re unlikely to get much done if you’re checking Twitter every thirty seconds. If this sounds familiar, you might want to install software on your computer/phone to temporarily block any websites or apps that you find distracting. The same applies to TV, friends, partners and anything else that stops you paying attention to your work: If it’s distracting, make sure it isn’t part of your study environment! 4. Background Music Many people find a bit of background music good for concentration. Instrumental music is the best option here, as songs with lyrics can become distracting. Note, however, that wearing headphones while revising has been found to make it harder to recall what you’ve read. So although you might think that wearing headphones is a good way to block out noise when studying at a coffee shop, it might also interfere with your learning! It definitely helps if you open your eyes, too. 5. Comfort is Key! Temperature, lighting and comfort all make a big difference if you’re settling in for a prolonged study session. Make sure your environment is cool, well-lit and comfortable enough that you won’t become restless after a few minutes working. Taking regular breaks is also helpful. You can also be too comfortable, though, so studying in bed is probably not a great idea. 6. Be Prepared†¦ Ultimately, the most important thing when creating a study environment is to be prepared! This means having everything you need to hand when you start, including books, notes, pens and pencils, a drink, snacks and any other study resources you find helpful to have around.

Libation

Libation Libation Libation By Maeve Maddox A cutesy use of the word libation is becoming popular with restaurateurs. I heard a radio spot for a local eatery of no particular elegance advertising â€Å"food and libations.† Pinterest has a category called â€Å"Elegant Food and Libations,† and numerous restaurants advertising on the web offer libations. One of them has made sure that potential customers know the meaning of the L word by posting the anticipated question and its answer on its home page: What are Libations? â€Å"They are drinks!† Until the 17th century, when some classically educated young gentleman thought it would be funny to call wine intended to be drunk by his guests â€Å"libations,† the word’s standard use was to refer to an ancient religious practice. libation: noun. The pouring out of wine or other liquid in honor of a god; the liquid so poured out; a drink-offering. Libation is from the Latin verb libare, â€Å"to libate, to pour out in honor of a god.† The usual liquid to pour out in the context of honoring a god or one’s ancestors is wine or some other alcoholic drink, although a libation can be any liquid. Water is poured out by Buddhists. In ancient Rome, milk was poured out to the goddess of childbirth. In addition to being offered to deities, libations were poured out in honor of one’s ancestors. Relatives visiting a Roman necropolis might pour a libation directly onto a grave, or into pipes installed for the purpose. The practice of pouring an offering of liquid onto the ground, an altar, an amulet, or a sacrificial animal has been a part of religious practice in all parts of the world. It continues into modern times in various religious and cultural contexts. A Cuban custom is to spill a drop or two of rum, while saying â€Å"para los santos (for the saints).† A similar custom exists in the Philippines, where someone opening a bottle of rum will spill a capful, saying â€Å"para sa yawa (for the Devil).† The following rap lyrics refer to a libation practice called â€Å"tipping,† in which malt liquor is spilled on the ground in memory of the dead: â€Å"Pour out a little liquor† Pour out a little liquor for your homies 2Pak Going down the drain I’d like to keep stepping But I can’t get past the pain, I tip my 40 to your memory Take a drink and I start to think DRS Gangsta Lean Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Addiction is a brain disease Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Addiction is a brain disease - Research Paper Example Addiction has been considered a major society’s problem and it is because of this that some experts believe it as a brain disease at some point. This paper tries to explain that addiction is indeed a disease of the brain. Addiction defined Addiction is a specific behavioral problem that is usually manifested with lack of control of using and seeking something just like drugs, sex and gambling (Gamonet & Piazza, 2010; Goodman, 2008). It is also known as a syndrome in which there is a considerable focus on the impaired control over a behavior (West & Hardy, 2006). Addiction therefore is something that takes control over someone’s life. Someone who is addicted to something else is after of uncontrolled longing for self gratification. Although addiction may differ from what a habit is, the entire point is that its manifestation can always be observed from a behavioral point of view. However, addiction can also be explained from the biological context and this primarily invo lves the study of the brain and its other related fields. Brain disease defined From a biomedical model, disease is defined based on the context of four assumptions in which one of them states that it is a deviation from normal biological functioning (Mishler, 1981). From this assumption, a brain disease therefore is implied as the brain’s inability to function well based on what a normal one can potentially do. This is a generic point of view, but the entire argument in the above assumption is that a deviation from the norm especially when there is involved biological functioning is ground to be considered as a disease. Evidences about addiction is brain disease In order to consider addiction as a brain disease, it is important to trace the very nature of a normal brain and its potential functions in the human body. The normal human brain is said to have the capacity to take control over the entire body. However, aside from the biological stand point, the brain does not only control the whole activities of the body, but primarily thoughts and behavior (Feldman, 2003). This implies that a normal brain has the capacity to create normal thoughts and behavior. Since addiction is a behavioral problem, the brain therefore has specific problem by itself considering that it should have the capacity to create normal thoughts and behaviors in the first place. Furthermore, based on the assumption about normal biological functioning of the body, a normal brain therefore has to function well as expected resulting to create normal thoughts or behaviors. Doctor Alan Lesbner, director of the National Institute of Drug Abuse personally believes that addiction is a brain disease (Walsh, 1997). This is based on the idea that drug addiction is just a result of one’s brain inability to take control of a certain behavior. Doctor Lesbner argued that not all of those who abused drugs resulted to addiction because the brain has a certain capacity to control human behavi or. In fact, not all of those who tried prohibited drugs are addicted. Furthermore, not all of those who start gambling and having sex are addicted to such of these activities. However, the abuse of drugs for instance leads to some changes in the brain and to some extent they are harmful for its normal functioning (Heyman, 2009). Some recent findings showing addiction is a brain disease supported the idea of Doctor Lesbner. Recent findings suggest that addiction is associated with dysfunction of brain tissues resulting to the disruption of regions in the brain which are capable of controlling the normal process of motivation, reward and inhibitory control (Ries et al., 2009; Heyman & Brownsberger, 2001; Flores, 1997). The advent of technological breakthroughs makes this

Production of tpa using eukaryotic n prokaryotic cells Essay - 1

Production of tpa using eukaryotic n prokaryotic cells - Essay Example course of production, safety precautions have to be strictly adhered to, as the drugs are poisons in nature and could cause severe body harm if misused. A method for producing tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) in eukaryotic host cells is disclosed. Enhanced levels of t-PA production are obtained by co-amplification of the t-PA gene through treatment of cultures transformed with mutant or wild type DHFR with methotrexate. Â  A cell culture comprising methotrexate (MTX) sensitive recombinant host cells transformed with an expression vector comprising a first DNA sequence encoding a dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) protein with a low binding affinity for MTX, and a second DNA sequence encoding human tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), tPA encoded by said second DNA sequence, and an effective amplifying concentration of MTX. The invention herein relates to the production of human tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) in a transformant host cell culture. More specifically, the invention relates to vectors, cells, and methods of producing tPA in conjunction with expression of the sequences for coding for dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) protein in such cells. Another example that describes use of CHO cells as host cells, and expression vectors which include the SV40 origin of replication as a promoter. However, it would be well within the skill of the art to use analogous techniques to construct expression vectors for expression of desired protein sequences in alternative eukaryotic host cell cultures. If cells without formidable cell wall barriers are used as host cells, transfection is carried out by the calcium phosphate precipitation method as described by Graham and Van der Eb, Virology, 52:546 (1978). However, other methods for introducing DNA into cells such as by nuclear injection or by protoplast fusion may also be used. Construction of suitable vectors containing the desired coding and control sequences employ standard ligation techniques. Isolated plasmids or

The Computer Internet And Video Game Addiction Media Essay

The Computer Internet And Video Game Addiction Media Essay Introduction: In this review report i will discuss about the article about The Computer, Internet, and Video Game Addiction by Douglas A. Gentile. In the article the author discussed about the issue about the addictions because of computer, internet, and video games, and he discussed about the warning signs and symptoms in order to detect the addiction status. In the article the author says that because of the high addictiveness to these technology inventions causes disruptions to works, friends, school, and family. The author explained that the addiction to something will cause damage to the functionality of their life. It may be more one or two functional areas of life that may get damaged because of addiction of something. And the author used a scale to determine the addictiveness of a person. I agree with the author as he says that the addiction disrupts the functioning of social life in many areas but he did not mentioned about the new technologies and services like social networking addictio n and text messaging services. As the author said the addiction to internet may not always damages their social relations. I shall show that the addictions to internet may improve the social functionality of the people. Critical Review: The topic of this review is the addiction of new technologies and services developed in recent years. Douglas A. Gentile clearly explained in his article about the issue and warning signs and how to rescue the people from addiction. In recent years technology is growing rapidly. As a result of this technological development so many new facilities and services are coming forward. Computers and Internet services are some of the major aspects grown very rapidly in the past decade. The number of users using these services increasing day by day. These new technologies and internet services are very useful and became very important aspects in regular life as we have so many advantages with them. Some people uses internet for longer hours daily. Psychologists named it as internet-addiction disorder. But so many people used to spend hours of time on their computers even before the usage of internet came into their regular life. We can call it as computer addiction. And one more powerful, rou tine and mostly accepted addiction is video gaming. And what about mobile phones? Persons get addicted to these mobile phones too. With the help of developing technology the researchers will implement all the computer, mobile phone and videos gaming features into single equipment in near future, possibly mostly addictive. In Douglas A. Gentiles article he explained the term addiction as to do something which will spoil their regular life functionalities. They will spoil more than one or two functionalities of their normal life such as their social functionality and work operations, school operations and even family relations just because of their addiction. By considering the above functionality disorders Gentile said that 8.5% of young games are addicted in America. (Gentile 2009).[1] As of now there are no accepted risk factors or symptoms in order to identify the addiction Gentile suggested some factors as a basic guide to find the addiction of video games. He suggested the symptoms for children and adults. Those are, in case of children, they will spend most of the time in playing games, incompletion of assignments, getting less grades, falling into sleep in school hours, always likes to play video games instead of playing with their friends, lying about the use of computer and games, not interested to spend time in sports and clubs, violent response when anyone tries to stop their game play. These are the symptoms suggested by Gentile to be used as a guide to identify the addiction in case of children. And when it comes to the adults he suggested the risk factors as follows. When the time spending on video game play increases it seriously disrupts the family, social life and even work life, cannot control the use of computers and video games, that fantasy vide o game life replaces the original normal life with partner, they will lie about the use of the computer and games. And Gentile also suggested some physical symptoms which may indicate to addiction. Those symptoms are disturbances in sleep, back ache and neck aches, headaches and neglecting personal hygiene because of not eating regularly.[1] In his article Gentile said that for the person who is addicted to computers and video games, a fantasy life in on-line or in the video games replaces his original real world. The virtual reality of the video games is more attractive than real world, family, school, or work. And the improved right of entry to pornography on the on-line and in video games. And Gentile mentioned different approaches in order to define the addictions. However, they are likely to share various characteristics. In 1991 Brown potted 6 core facets in order to identify the presence of the addiction, and those facets are alike across various approaches. The facets summarized by Brown are salience, is defined as the action which controls the life of a person either cognitively or behaviourally. And another facet is euphoria/relief, and is defined as an action which provides high. And another one is tolerance is defined as the greater action is required to get the similar high. And another facet is withdrawal symptoms is defined as the occurrence of unlikeable negative emotions or physical effects while not capable to employ the action. And Conflict is defined as the action that directs to clash with others, and relapse and reinstatement is defined as the action continued in spite of challenges to withhold from it.[3] Douglas A. Gentile defined a scale in order to calculate the addiction level of a person. That scale includes the following questions. Have you turn into extra anxious in the past year while playing video games or while using computer? Have you spend lot of time and money in order to play games and in order to get required excitement in the past year? Have you tried to minimise your playing time in the past year? Have you become short-tempered or irritable while trying to stop playing games? Have you lied your parents or friends about the time you spend to play games? (For children)Have you ever done incomplete assignments because spending more time on video games in the past year? Have you required the financial help of family or friends for the reason of spending lot of money on video games? Have you committed anti-social activities such as theft from home or friends to buy video games? And he explained how to score this scale. And how to decide the level of addiction using this score. As Gentile mentioned people needed to count 1 if the answer is Yes and they need to count as 0 if they get No. So finally if u gets yes for half of the questions then you are in addiction. And if u get No for more than half questions then less addictive or not addicted. According to the opinion of the author Gentile he considered this type of disorder as impulse-control disorder. It means the person who plays the games knows that he should finish his home work, but he cannot stop the desire to play for some more time. And the Gentile said that it is not only in the case of games. The person may have addiction of computers or internet to stay away from rest of their social life.[2] The author has given some reasons on why people get addicted to the internet, computers and games. He said three basic requirements that direct to human motivation. These requirements are the requirement of autonomy (that is the human want to believe that he is in charge about the thing he is doing), the requirement of relatedness (it means that human wants to feel joined with other persons), and the requirement of competence (that is human want to believe that he is better at things). These are the three basic requirements of self-determination theory. The video games and internet are superb to satisfy these three requirements and because of this reason they are highly motivating things and leads people to get addicted to them. Gentile gave some suggestions in his article about how to get out of these disorders. He suggested taking the person who is spending lot of time on games and internet to the counsellor who treats the people having impulse-control disorders. And he suggested some changes to take in the living patterns of their family. That is by making the children to spend more time with their family. Because if the adults are busy at their work then their kids try to entertain themselves by playing games and can become addictive to those games. And if you want to stop your children from playing games first you need to arrange some alternative to replace those games. You need to fulfil their needs which they are getting by playing games. And he suggested some links for specialize treatment for video games and internet addictions. Those are http://techaddiction.ca/ and http://www.netaddictionrecovery.com/. [2] As Gentile said in his article i agree with him that the addiction to something leads a person to spoil his regular life operations such as their school operations, time spending with their friends, work operations and also family relations. But here the author did not mentioned about the social networking sites available on internet. In present days most of the people using the social networking sites such facebook, orkut, hi5 and most of the internet users became addicted to these social networking sites. And by using these sites they will can make good relations with their friends and they can make their social relations stronger. So that i cannot agree with the author as he said that the addiction spoils the social relations. The symptoms suggested by the Gentile are good enough to identify the addiction of children and in case of adults also. Those symptoms or risk factors are much accurate to identify the addiction. I agree with the author to use those factors as a guide to detect the addiction. And by following the physical symptoms suggested by gentile as indications we can definitely know whether we are addicted to any of those computers, video games, and internet or not. And i support the questions covered in the scale taken by gentle in order to find out the addiction level of a person. By asking those questions themselves the people can find out their addiction level and can take some cautions to get out of the addiction. And he gave some best reasons for getting addicted to these technology things. And the addiction to the internet and video games may not always a big problem as those addictions may get out of the people as time passes. And these things are even not recognized by the American Psy chiatric Association as a medical disorder Conclusion: In this review I have discussed the article about The Computer, Internet, and Video Game Addiction by Douglas A. Gentile. This article explained so many points regarding the addiction of people to the technologies like computers, video games and internet. In his article the author has given some symptoms to find the addiction and he gave some reasons for addiction. The author shown that the excessive use of computer, internet and video games make people to damage their social life and their relationships with the real world. But it may not acceptable in case of internet because so many social networking websites are available in internet to which most of the people getting addicted. Even though they are addicted to those social networking websites they can continue their relations with the people around them and can make their relations even stronger by using those websites through internet. Even some people may balance their social things even though they spend more time on internet and video games. And the author explained three motivations that can lead people to get addicted with the video games. One of those three motivations is the people feel that the human feels that he is better at things. It may not correct that all the people who spend more time on video games feels like they are better at those things. And the most of the points explained by the author Gentile are agreeable and very useful.
